THE SOUTH

THE SOUTH

The southern half of Israel, the Negev, is a desert, contiguous with the Sinai, the Sahara and the Arabian Deserts.

Recommended stay in the south: 2 nights or more.

The Negev

The colorful Makhtesh Ramon is a unique land-form – one of three erosion craters in the Negev, and five such land-forms worldwide – and deserves a full day trekking tour.

There is ample evidence of prosperous ancient human life in the Negev, at archaeological sites such as Mamshit (Memphis) and Avdat.

Currently living in the region are also Bedouins, conflicted between keeping their traditional life and giving way to modern influence.

The city of Be'er Sheva, in the northern Negev, is known as the country of Abraham, the patriarch of the Hebrews and the Arabs, father of Isaac and Ishmael.

Eilat

The city of Eilat - at the southernmost end of the Negev desert - is the gateway of Israel to the East, via the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. Sandy beaches, coral reefs and wild mountains, made of igneous rocks and colorful sandstone carved by the elements, and ancient copper mines, are found in the region. Enjoy trekking in this unique desert region.
