Dr. Meir Sheffer is the best! … Tour guide, Meir Sheffer… was such a great guide for our group that we specifically asked for him to lead two of our other "Bein Harim" Tours during our stay. Given that it was still a holiday in Israel and not a holiday but a day of strike in Palestine (the location of Bethlehem), I was anxious about our travel. Meir's calm professorial manner helped us forget the modern-day tensions which made it possible for us to immerse ourselves in the religious history (the purpose of our trip). We entered Bethlehem and toured the Chapel of the Shepherd's Field and from there, we went to the Church of the Nativity. There Meir was met by a colleague, Jaber, an Arab Christian, and together they led us through the Basilica and to see the birthplace ("manger") where Jesus was born. Together Meir and Jaber made a great team - a non-practicing Jew and a passionate Arab Christian. Following lunch, we loaded into the air-conditioned van (it was 100 degrees that day so this van feature was necessary) and made our way to Jericho - the world's oldest city. We toured Jericho and then drove to see the location on the Jordan River where John the Baptist baptized Jesus.
What a day!"
